During a televised briefing, Chris Rozman, interim deputy chief of the university police, confirmed that at least five victims had been transported to the hospital, some with life-threatening injuries, and MSU police issued an update by Twitter a short time later saying that at least three additional people had been killed.
MSU police have been searching the campus for the suspect, and several campus buildings have been cleared and secured by police. Students, faculty, and residents in surrounding off-campus neighborhoods have been urged to "shelter in place" while the manhunt continues.
The shooting at Michigan State University comes just over a year after the deadly mass shooting at Oxford High School, Michigan, in which a 15-year-old student opened fire with a semi-automatic pistol, killing four classmates and wounding six other students and a teacher.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer tweeted that she was being briefed on the East Lansing shooting.
